Dr. Aparna Menon

Dr. Aparna Menon

She still takes continuing education credits to further her dental knowledge. She’s also a member of the American Dental Association (ADA), the New Jersey Dental Association (NJDA), and the Monmouth-Ocean County Dental Society (M-OCDS). She’s had some amazing personal experiences, and we’re so excited to share them. Here’s Dr. Menon’s story:

I grew up in India, in a family of physicians. My mom is a doctor and my aunt is a doctor, so it was natural for me to get into the health care system. I was blessed with strong female role models who taught me the value of independence in a society that gives males preferential treatment, and where women are simply married off. Education was a top priority in my family. Money, I was taught, can come and go, but education is something that no one can take away.

Not many people get proper dental care in India. I don’t even remember going to the dentist as a child. As I grew older, I realized that dentistry wasn’t given nearly enough attention. This — combined with the fact that there were no dentists in my family — made me realize that dentistry was the field I wanted to get into. After that, things just fell into place.

In order to get into medicine or dentistry in India, your national examination scores have to be ranked very high. Fortunately, I got high marks, which meant I was able to go to the top universities in India, including the highly-ranked dental school in Manipal. After graduation, I had the opportunity to come to the U.S. When I got here, I studied yet again at the Rutherford University School of Dental Medicine, where I was on the dean’s honor list for two years, before going through a year of residency.

One of my absolute favorite things to do is spend time with my husband, Rajibe, and my 5-year-old son, Shaan. Between family time, dentistry, and running six to eight miles on the weekends, I don’t have time for much else.

I’ve been running most of my life. This year, I’m embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For the last three years, I’ve been trying to get into the New York City Marathon. This year, I was fortunate enough to be chosen for the 2016 race. The marathon goes through all five boroughs of New York, and hits every major landmark in the city. It starts in Staten Island, and ends in Central Park in Manhattan. I can’t wait for November; the energy and excitement of a great race is always amazing. When I start training for November’s race in a couple months, I’ll run at least 30 miles a week.

The other important thing about me is that I believe in karma. In my opinion, what goes around, comes around — so it’s important to do right by people. I strive to treat people how I want to be treated because I believe if you put good out there, it comes back to you.

Dr. Amarpreet Suri

After completing my formal dental education at the New York University College of Dentistry, I began a general residency program at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey. It felt wonderful to be back in my homestate after four years in the Big Apple. Throughout residency, I began to develop a vision of the type of dental practice I wanted to be a part of as I entered the next chapter of my career. I first met Dr. Friedman as he was an attending at the residency program. I worked closely on several cases with Dr. Friedman and even had the opportunity to learn sedation techniques from him. After spending some time at the office, I knew it reflected the vision I had of my dream practice. When Dr. Friedman asked if I would like to join the Newman Springs Dental Care Team, the answer was clear. I had found the practice I could call home.

I quickly found within my first few days as the new doctor at Newman Springs Dental Care that even Dr. Friedman’s patients felt this was their home away from home. Many patients had been coming for years and now bring their children and grandchildren! What I admire most are the core values of the practice. The entire team reflects Dr. Friedman as he makes it his priority to put the patient first and provide optimal care. The relationships he has developed with his patients over the years are a testiment to his approach. At NSDC, I am grateful to have another amazing mentor – Dr. Aparna Menon – who mirrors those same core values and guides me to do the same.

I have been with the practice since early this summer, and have had time to develop my own meaningful relationships with my patients. My patients and the care I provide is the most important aspect of being in the health care field. As I approach the holiday season, and reflect on all the wonderful milestones this year, I am grateful to be part of such an incredible team at Newman Springs Dental Care. Being a part of practice has given me the opportunity to once again give back to the community in this year’s, Dentistry From The Heart. I noticed that many patients initially presented to DFTH for a tooth ache or cleaning. Once they experienced the warmth with which they were treated, they too made Newman Springs Dental Care their dental home. I will be sure to be a part of this selfless cause for years to come.

This year is especially dear to my heart as I married my high school sweetheart, Dr. Tarandeep Singh, on September 8th. After a beautiful eleven years together, which included us both graduating dental school and completing general practice residencies, we tied the knot right here in Somerset, New Jersey. Both being from New Jersey and spending many weeks of vacation time over the years studying and preparing for board exams, we knew we wanted to go somewhere incredible for our honeymoon. We spent two weeks on an island in the Maldives. We experienced our first time snorkeling with sharks, turtles, and even dolphins! It was absolutely stunning and definitely a memory we will cherish for years to come.

My most recent pursuit is a two yaer residency in surgical and restorative implantology at New York University’s Rosenthal Institute Continuing Dental Education. I love learning new techniques and applying them in practice. I think it is so very important to stay on the forefront of your field so you can provide the best to those who trust you with their care. I also dedicate between one and two weekends a month providing dental care to the Army at Sea Girt and Fort Dix. It is my small way of giving back to those who sacrifice so much for us.

Last but not least, I want to thank Dr. Friedman, Dr. Menon and the entire team at Newman Springs Dental Care for giving me such a warm welcome. The transition into the practice has been seemless and I am looking forward to all the growth that awaits. I also want to thank my lovely patients, that always come in with a smile and make Newman Springs Dental Care a part of their lives. My patients are what make what I do so enjoyable and I look forward to creating life- long relationships in our practice that I now call Home.
